Actor Andy Whitfield, who starred in the gladiator-period drama series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand", has passed away Sunday (Sept. 11, 2011) after battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was 37 years-old.
His wife, Vashti, who was with him in Sydney, Australia, said in a statement that he was a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife."
After making waves as Spartacus on its first season, Whitfield was not able to return for the following season after being diagnosed with Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early March. He must undergo “aggressive treatment” for the disease.
Starz cable network chose Liam McIntyre, another Australian actor, as Whitfield's replacement.
